Matt Gilliam: Former Chief Prosecutor, Houston Criminal Defense Attorney

Matt Gilliam, Houston's Best Criminal Defense Lawyer by Former Chief Felony Prosecutor

Matthew W. Gilliam: Your Trusted Legal Ally

Matthew Gilliam is a former felony Chief prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Matt has over a decade’s worth of experience handling complex and serious criminal cases in Texas. Matt left the DA’s office as a felony Chief in the Organized Crimes Division where he managed a caseload of high-level felonies such as capital murders, engaging in organized crime, and aggravated robberies. In addition to his caseload, Matt also got a first-hand look into the innerworkings of police investigations by assisting officers with the drafting of search warrants, arrest warrants and various court orders.

Matt also served as a Chief prosecutor in the Trial Bureau during his ten-year tenure at the DA’s office.  In the Trial Bureau he was responsible for managing a team of junior prosecutors while overseeing a large docket of felonies ranging from possession of controlled substances to capital murder. Prior to becoming a Chief prosecutor, Matt was assigned to the Major Narcotics Division where he handled large drug cases and assisted various federal and state law enforcement agencies including the FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Office with their investigations of Drug Trafficking Organizations.

Matt never shied away from a jury trial during his prosecutorial career and learned the importance of talking to a jury, not at them. Matt has tried almost every type of criminal case, including capital murders, murders, sexual offenses, drug cases, driving while intoxicated, and lower-level misdemeanors.

Before joining the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Matt worked as a labor and employment litigation associate at a large multi-national law firm. In that role Matt defended cases alleging discrimination, equal pay violations, retaliation, harassment, and sexual assault in state and federal courts.
